3 Words (I Love You)

Well the world is plotted out by satellite,

there ain’t no land left that ain’t been quantified.

The pioneers and the pilgrims of the world are retired,

the outlaw left running with no place to hide.

-

But I ain’t running.  I’m right here with you,

where there’s just twenty six letters in the words I choose

to analyze the ways I connect with  you.

And every poet, with his pen, has tried to say something new,

but the letters don’t align like they’re supposed to.

*

So I ain’t gonna worry about the words.

I know three words will do,

if I spend the rest of my life

making sure that you know they’re true.

So right now, baby, the best I can do is

I love you.

-

The other day I sat and listened to the wild birds sing,

senseless through the branches of an old oak tree.

Now the seasons have changed, there’s a chill in the air,

but they sat there singing ’til they found their pair.

-

Ain’t that just like our hearts, darling?  Callin’ out.

And I know sometimes it seems we’re so far apart,

just shoutin’ through the hollow between our hearts.

Still I know there’s a place we can meet in the middle,

where real emotion don’t get caught up in riddle.

And the only words we’ll ever use are

I love you.

*

I ain’t gonna worry about the words.

I know three words will do,

if I spend the rest of my life

making sure that you know they’re true.

So right now, baby, the best I can do is

I love you.
